Exceptional Students
Aims
To allow full inclusion to the curriculum for all students, and to ensure that all students can fulfil their right to a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum.
Objectives
- To assist in the identification, assessment and monitoring of exceptional students throughout the curriculum but initially concentrating on the core subjects
- To aid in the preparation of resources and the appropriate matching of programmes of study for exceptional students whilst ensuring resources are allocated to meet the needs of individual students with exceptional needs
- To support students in the classroom, initially concentrating within core subjects but also where there is a need elsewhere in the curriculum
- To participate in staff development programmes and to disseminate knowledge and research pertaining to exceptional students
How
- By giving assistance to curriculum areas and individual staff members to ascertain and realise the support needed for exceptional students, aid in the development of assessment criteria to identify exceptional students, linking assessment criteria to National Curriculum attainment targets and levels
- By building up a record of exceptional students from: feeder school records; parents; teacher referrals; recording all student assessments in a central database and linking these records to National Curriculum attainment targets and levels; diagnostic testing and for this record to be disseminated to all staff in regular meetings
- By developing resource packages in basic skills; spelling; reading; handwriting; listening
By assisting the cognitive development of specific students to enable their learning styles to be maximised
- By assisting subject areas in developing differentiated course material for all levels of ability
- By assisting with the planning and implementation of individual and group programmes of appropriate teaching help
- By assisting in the development of workshops for parents of exceptional students so that they can participate in their child’s education both at home and at College
- By building up resources pertaining to special needs within the Information Centre
- By giving workshops and training to staff pertaining to special needs
- Attending courses to keep abreast of current developments in special needs for exceptional students
